UMPSA Academic Leads Fundamental R Programming Workshop for UTHM Community

Around 120 participants, comprising first- and second-year students, lecturers, administrative staff, and industry practitioners, attended the workshop entitled “Data Modelling Analysis Using R Language”, organized by the Computational Data Analytics Programme, Faculty of Applied Sciences and Technology, Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM) on 16 June 2026.

The online workshop, conducted from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM, featured Assoc. Prof. Ts. Dr. Noryanti Muhammad from the Centre for Mathematical Sciences (CMS), Universiti Malaysia Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah (UMPSA) as the invited speaker and instructor.

Recognizing that many participants were new to R programming, the workshop primarily focused on fundamental R programming skills as the foundation for effective data analysis and modelling. Participants were introduced to the R environment, basic syntax, data structures, data import and management techniques, data visualization, and essential statistical analysis functions. The session also demonstrated how R can be used as a powerful open-source tool for handling, analysing, and interpreting data across various disciplines.

Through a series of hands-on activities and guided demonstrations, participants gained practical experience in writing R scripts, manipulating datasets, generating descriptive statistics, and creating visual representations of data. The workshop emphasized the importance of developing strong programming fundamentals before progressing to more advanced topics in data modelling and analytics.

The enthusiastic participation from students, academic staff, university administrators, and industry practitioners highlighted the increasing demand for data literacy and analytical skills in both higher education and professional settings. The programme also provided a valuable platform for knowledge sharing and networking among participants from diverse backgrounds.

As organizations increasingly rely on data-driven decision-making, proficiency in tools such as R has become an essential skill. The workshop successfully equipped participants with foundational competencies that will support their future learning in data science, statistical modelling, machine learning, and business analytics.

CMS UMPSA extends its sincere appreciation to UTHM for the invitation and the opportunity to contribute to this knowledge-sharing initiative. The programme reflects UMPSA’s ongoing commitment to advancing data analytics education and fostering collaboration among universities, industry, and the wider community.
