PSM UMPSA Lights Up "Hari TVET Negara 2024" with Hands-On Data Analytics Activities

PSM UMPSA conducted an educational and entertaining event on “TVET in the Age of Data Analytics: Building a Future-Ready Workforce” for the Hari TVET Negara 2024 programme. It was held on 1st and 2nd June 2024, at the Mathematics Support Centre, UMPSA Gambang campus. Approximately 160 students including teachers from Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Bukit Cermin, Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Jengka 6, Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Seri Jengka, Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Maran 2 participated in a series of hands-on activities focused on data analytics applications to inspire students' interest in technology and its real-world applications. The event was conducted by the PSM lecturers, Dr. Ku Muhammad Na'im bin Ku Khalif and facilitated by Dr. Nadirah binti Mohd Nasir and Miss Nur Zahirah binti Md Nor.

Prof. Dr. Mohd Zuki bin Salleh, the Dean, presided over the two-day event. Students were introduced to data analytics through hands-on activities.

The activity for the case study "Harnessing Data to Fight Crime" showed how data analytics can examine crime patterns, anticipate future crimes, and help law enforcement design crime prevention methods. Students learned to recognise trends and draw conclusions from real data sets.
 
Another highlight was the student exploration of artificial intelligence and image processing using AI open-source tools like Ultralytics and Teachable Machine in the "Computer Vision" activity. They discovered how computer vision may be used for facial recognition and automated industrial quality inspection. Students tried image recognition software and learned machine learning in the hands-on activities.
 
Students were thrilled to learn about cutting-edge technologies in a hands-on, interactive setting. The facilitators commended the students' desire to learn and enthusiastic activities involvement. Dr. Ku Muhammad Na'im bin Ku Khalif stressed the necessity of such activities in raising a generation of tech-savvy, future-ready people. He stressed the importance of TVET in preparing students for the fast-changing work economy. The Centre for Mathematical Sciences looks forward to supporting STEM education and equipping Malaysia's youth with the tools they need for a bright future.
