PSM UMPSA Brings Scratch Programming to 50 Primary School Pupils Through Profesor Turun Padang Programme

The Centre for Mathematical Sciences (PSM), Universiti Malaysia Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah (UMPSA), organised the Program Profesor Turun Padang Scratch di SK (Felda) Sungai Panching Timur at the Computer Laboratory of Sekolah Kebangsaan (Felda) Sungai Panching Timur on 17 September 2026. The programme was conducted in collaboration with SK (Felda) Sungai Panching Timur and involved the participation of 50 Year 3 pupils.

In addition to serving as a platform for data collection for a project under the Community Social Innovation and Knowledge Transfer Grant (CDU), the workshop also served as a testing platform for a Malay-language Scratch Module. Developed using the national language, the module was specifically designed to facilitate the understanding of programming concepts among primary school pupils. This initiative is particularly relevant as Scratch is incorporated into the Design and Technology (RBT) curriculum and provides early exposure for Year 3 pupils who will be introduced to RBT more formally in Year 4.

Throughout the workshop, the pupils were introduced to the fundamentals of Scratch programming before being guided to develop creative projects such as games, animations, and interactive stories. This hands-on approach provided the pupils with an engaging opportunity to explore basic programming concepts in a fun and interactive learning environment.

At the end of the programme, an online quiz was conducted to assess the pupils’ understanding of the concepts covered during the workshop. Souvenirs were also presented to the winners who successfully answered the questions correctly and promptly using the Wayform platform.

Overall, the pupils demonstrated great enthusiasm and interest in learning Scratch programming. The simple, visual, and user-friendly interface of Scratch was among the key factors that attracted their interest, making the learning experience more engaging, enjoyable, and accessible. PSM UMPSA hopes that its collaboration with the school and the local community can be continued in a sustainable and meaningful manner. Such initiatives are important in expanding access to STEM education while nurturing pupils’ interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, in line with the evolving educational landscape and the needs of the future.
