Industrial Talk BSD2143 Operational Research: Operations Research in Industry from Oil & Gas Optimization to Airline Operations
On 19 June 2026, an Industrial Talk for the course BSD2143 Operational Research was successfully conducted by the Centre for Mathematical Sciences (Pusat Sains Matematik, PSM), Universiti Malaysia Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah (UMPSA). The session was held online via Microsoft Teams from 9.00 pm to 11.00 pm.
The talk, entitled “Operations Research in Industry: From Oil & Gas Optimization to Airline Operations”, was delivered by Ms. Nurul Musfirah binti Murad, Senior Data Scientist with specialization in Operations Research at AirAsia. Prior to joining AirAsia, she served as a Senior Data Scientist at Petronas Digital Sdn. Bhd., where she was involved in several large-scale and high-impact optimization projects in the oil and gas industry.
During the session, the speaker shared her professional experience in applying Operations Research and mathematical optimization in real industrial settings. The talk also introduced students to practical applications involving optimization models, data-driven decision making, and the use of analytical tools such as OR-Tools in solving operational problems, including examples related to aircraft routing optimization.
This industrial talk provided valuable exposure to students, lecturers, and participants on how the theories learned in BSD2143 Operational Research can be applied in real business and industrial environments. It also helped strengthen the connection between academic learning and industry practice, particularly in the areas of data analytics, optimization, and decision science.
Thank you to Ms. Nurul Musfirah binti Murad for the insightful sharing, and congratulations to all students, lecturers, participants, and everyone who contributed to the successful implementation of this industrial talk.
