PSM UMPSA Empowers 172 SPM Candidates through Add Maths Tri-Focus and Math Honeycomb Innovation

Centre for Mathematical Sciences (PSM), Universiti Malaysia Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah (UMPSA), successfully organised the Profesor Turun Padang: Add Maths Tri-Focus SPM @ UMPSA programme in collaboration with the Jabatan Pendidikan Negeri Pahang (JPN Pahang) and Pejabat Pendidikan Daerah Kuantan (PPD Kuantan).

Initiated and led by Dr. Rahimah Jusoh @ Awang, the programme involved 20 staff members from the Centre for Mathematical Sciences, who served as facilitators and members of the organising committee. The programme was held at Block W and the Mathematics Support Centre (MSC), UMPSA Gambang Campus, bringing together 172 students from 40 secondary schools who are preparing for the 2026 Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination.

The programme was designed to strengthen students’ understanding and mastery of Additional Mathematics through the use of the innovative Math Honeycomb learning kit. To provide a comfortable and conducive learning environment, the participants were divided into five groups and placed in separate lecture rooms.

The academic component of the programme focused on three key SPM Additional Mathematics topics: Differentiation, Integration and Probability Distribution. Throughout the three academic slots, the students received focused instruction, step-by-step explanations and targeted problem-solving guidance from PSM facilitators. The Math Honeycomb learning kit was incorporated into the teaching sessions to help students identify, organise and recall important mathematical concepts and formulae more effectively. Its visual and foldable design provided students with a practical learning aid that made complex mathematical concepts easier to understand and remember.

Meanwhile, an exclusive Scholarly Sharing Session was conducted for the accompanying teachers. The session introduced opportunities for postgraduate studies and provided useful insights into academic advancement, lifelong learning and professional development. This initiative extended the programme’s impact beyond the participating students by supporting the continuous development of secondary school educators. This session was delivered by Dr. Nor Izzati Jaini, Associate Professor Dr. Abdul Rahman bin Mohd Kasim (Head of the Department of Mathematics, PSM) and Dr. Sahimel Azwal bin Sulaiman, Deputy Dean of Student Affairs, PSM. The students were also introduced to opportunities for pursuing Foundation studies at UMPSA through an informative sharing session, which provided valuable information on academic pathways, admission opportunities, and the university learning experience at UMPSA.

The closing ceremony was graced by Mr. Hazit bin Kamaruddin, SISC+ Mathematics Officer from the Learning Sector of the Kuantan District Education Office (PPD Kuantan), together with Associate Professor Dr. Mohd Sham bin Mohamad, Dean of the Centre for Mathematical Sciences, UMPSA.

The presence of representatives from PPD Kuantan and the university’s leadership reflected the strong commitment of all participating organisations towards improving mathematics education and supporting students in achieving academic excellence. Through this programme, PSM UMPSA hopes to sustain and further strengthen its strategic collaboration with state and district education authorities. Such initiatives are essential in cultivating students’ interest and confidence in mathematics while equipping them with the strong quantitative foundation required to pursue higher education and future careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

The Profesor Turun Padang: Add Maths Tri-Focus SPM @ UMPSA programme demonstrates the university’s continuing commitment to sharing academic expertise with the community and making innovative mathematics learning more accessible, engaging and meaningful for secondary school students.
